1.199: #Controversial 2

This might be controversial, but the police officers that continue to protest and revolt against New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio should be fired for insubordination and failure to perform their duties.  I read an interesting article recently (linked below) that basically stated that the actions of the protesting members of the NYPD serve as a direct threat to democracy and as yet another example of how law enforcement officers seek the same level of respect afforded to members of the armed services without any of the responsibilities and duties that come with the position.  The article speaks to how law enforcement and their supporters continually fail to understand the rationale of many of the protests that have occurred throughout the country; the rationale that protestors are not against the police, but are against an unfair justice system that permits law enforcement officials to demand adherence to demands and authorities that they themselves fail to adhere to.

In the article, the writer makes an interesting parallel between military and police in that despite personal feelings of disagreement between the individual serviceman and his Commander-in-Chief; one would never see such a blatant act of protest during the course of an official military-related event much less a funeral.  And if one did see such an act, then one could be assured that such actions would never be publicly condoned by any of the protestors’ superiors.  The fact that law enforcement officials continue to view themselves above the very laws they are sworn to uphold is absurd and the belief of their supporters that their actions are always just in spite of evidence to the contrary is borderline delusional.

Look, I am law abiding citizen with a immense amount of respect for the law, but strict adherence to the commands of overzealous law enforcement authorities simply because they wear a badge is just wrong.  I am American and as such, I am afforded certain rights that have been afforded to me by the state and simply because an police officer may feel threatened or may hold preconceived prejudices about me or minorities in general (I am an Asian-American) does not mean my rights get trampled upon and I get shot and they get off because the prosecutor does not have the gall to pursue justice or my character is assassinated by others (i.e. – the media).  And yes, I realize (1) Asian Americans do not stand at the same level of other minority groups because of certain preconceived perceptions and (2) I have sort of trailed away into a wholly different topic.

Anyways, here is the link to the article I’ve been referring to:  http://thefederalist.com/2014/12/31/the-nypds-revolt-is-a-direct-threat-to-democracy/.  It should be noted that this particular article is rather striking in the fact that it is written by an individual that I would normally have no desire to be linked to due to our normally opposing political viewpoints, but it is an interesting that despite political difference some injustices are beyond partisan lines.

1.194

Today was the first day of my “leisure calendar” experiment and it went good.  I was able to follow the schedule without any major issues and because I was able to follow the schedule, I was able to watch an anime that has been sitting in my queue for some time, Kuroko’s Basketball, and I was able to catch up with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. before the series premiere of Agent Carter tomorrow evening.  Perhaps, the only problem with the calendar is that I left no one for YouTube videos or iPhone games.  Of course, this is only the first day of this experiment to incorporate as many of my leisurely pleasures into my daily routine; tomorrow is a completely different story.

At work, nothing of any significance occurred, which is good.  There is still some tension between myself and my problematic coworker, but I’m a professional and I can separate personal tensions from professional relations (sometimes).  In truth, today was the sort of day one hopes for at the library—no complaining patrons (aside from the over-dramatic patron that wanted to fax something), no calls to emergency services, and no other coworkers crossing me in a negative matter.  I can only hope that this trend continues for the remainder of the work week though I doubt it because it will only be our full-time staffers tomorrow.

Anyway, I know that this seems a bit off pace from the usual offerings of late, but we simply have to remember that at the end of the day; this site is merely a personal journal.

1.193: Shite Book Reviews #2

Daredevil, Volume 4
Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, Michael Allred
Some time had elapsed between the readings of Volumes 3 and 4, but I had enough of a recollection of the previous volume to understand the happenings of this volume.  To be frank, it is often difficult to follow up an adventure involving Dr. Doom and the Avengers with a story involving a “C-List” villain (as described by Daredevil) and the falling out of his friendship with longtime friend and partner, Foggy Nelson.  Perhaps, this is a critical turning point for a major change in the Daredevil story, but it didn’t quite strike me as being as important as it may or may not be.

In truth, I did manage to learn a few more things about a character that, for the most part, I knew little about aside from his guest appearances in the Spider-man animated series of the 90s and the terrible feature-length film starring Ben Affleck.  And that right there was enough for this volume to garner an additional star in my rating of the book.  Hopefully, the book picks up the pace in the next couple of volumes because I have enjoyed most of this run by Mark Waid.

1.192: #Controversial 1

Originally, I wanted to call this new feature, “This Might Be Controversial…”, but it was a bit too long for the side bar so I decided to go with #Controversial because the “in” thing to do with most anything is to hashtag it.

Anyway, the idea is that I write about a controversial topic of my choosing and well, that’s it.  It may be uninformed and may cause the loss of brain cells, but I’m going to speak (or more accurately, write) from the gut and leave it out there for me to regret later.

In case you were wondering, this idea came about a few months back as I was listening to a program on NPR.  In the program, an individual was telling a story about a writing course she taught and how in order to promote discourse the class created a game in which a student would state the phrase “This might be controversial but…” and then proceed to discuss a possibly unpopular opinion.

I thought it was a cool idea and here I am today with the first installment of #Controversial.

This might be controversial, but I believe that guns do kill people and they kill whole shitload of them.  Should people be permitted to possess firearms?  Sure, if they are planning to go into the wood and use that gun to bring home food.  But, if their intention for the firearm is “protection”, then my response is no.  A gun has no other use than to kill and unless you are planning kill for the sake of feasting upon the flesh of a lesser beast, then you should not have a gun.  Guns kill--they make it easier to kill and they make it easier to get killed.  But, the reality is that guns are readily available and already in the possessions of millions of individuals throughout this country and nothing will change that fact.  What can change is the ease with which individuals can ascertain a firearm.  It should be incredibly difficult to purchase an instrument of death and yet, it is not.  On any day in America, I could step into a gun shop and purchase a firearm and ammunition and all that would be expected of me is the completion of some menial paperwork and brief screening period in order to assure that I am not a convict.  Or, if I am a convict, I could attend one of the many fine firearms trade shows that take place in my area and purchase a firearm from one of the many purveyors of death without the screening.  It is these sorts of loopholes that make our current gun control legislation next to useless.

Now, one would think with the multiple instances of mass gun-related deaths on our school campuses and in the workplace would serve as a wake up call to take action to limit access to these devices of death, but that is not the case thanks to terroristic organizations like the National Rifle Association that believe owning a fucking gun is more important than the lives of innocent children.  The same organization that parades around with a logo similar to the seals of our armed services as though they were some sort of civilian militia.  This organization who frightens lawmakers with threats of smear campaigns aimed toward removing them from office if they choose to go against their whims.  This organization that uses illogical, straw man arguments to confuse and mislead average citizens into valuing a couple of chunks of metal that serve no other purpose than to cause grave harm.  It is because of disgusting organizations like the NRA that we continue to hear countless stories of needless, easy death because they can spin a good tale about how for some messed up reasoning we are entitled to guns.

Owning a gun is not a right, but being able to live freely without fear that some overzealous idiot with a short-temper or one too many drinks will shoot me to death is one. Sadly, they have convinced lawmakers and many civilians otherwise and for what reason at this point other than stroke their egos knowing that in this regard they control the discourse.  Sure, there are many ways to die and be killed, but guns make it much easier to do it and thus guns kill people.

1.191: More Goals for 2015

After I posted my update concerning my goals for 2015, I found myself coming up with a number of other “smaller” goals that I wouldn’t mean accomplishing this year.  Of course, none of these are of any major significance and most are rather unquantifiable, but they’re goals to strive for in 2015.

Watch More Soccer
Last year, I know my soccer viewing diminished significantly.  I watched as much of the World Cup as I could, but not much else.  I couldn’t afford a MLS Live subscription so I was unable to watch many Sporting Kansas City matches and I often found myself watching little more than Manchester United fixtures at the club level. But, this year, I want to watch more matches and diversify my league and competition viewing.  I don’t want to be an expert, but I at least want to know what the people on my Twitter feed are discussing.

Watch Less Professional Wrestling Sports Entertainment
And by less, I mean far less—I’m thinking about no sports entertainment at all.  Look, I still have a soft spot in my heart for muscle-bound men in tights throwing fake punches at one another and scantily-clad women shoving their derrieres in one another’s faces, but I’m tired of seeing the same thing over and over and over again.  Truthfully, the final straw came on the last WWE Raw of 2014 when John Cena reinstated “The Authority”.  Honestly, I’m tired of Triple H, I’m sick of Stephanie McMahon, and I’m wary of this constant carousel of performers from when I was in high school. Anyways, I’m going to take a year away from sports entertainment and hope that come 2016, things will be different though I doubt it.

Watch More Anime
On my Twitter profile, I include the phrase “anime otaku” in my description, but I honestly have not watched an anime since (probably) before Anime Weekend Atlanta.  I need to get back in the mix, catch up with my queue and see what’s new in Japanese animation.

Reduce Carbonated Drink Intake
To be honest, I know that I’m going to fail hard at this because just today I have had one can of Coke Zero, one small Strawberry Fanta and about to polish off a bottle of Coke Zero.  I’ll be frank and say that I may never drop soda from the list of items I ingest, but I could should make an effort to reduce how much I ingest.  Perhaps, a single can a day or maybe one bottle (16.9 fl. oz.) a day?

Enter All of My Coke Rewards Codes
I have got Coke bottle caps everywhere and at some point, I just need to either enter them for points or throw them away because they are just taking up space.  My Coke Rewards (MCR) permits only 100 points per week (or 33 bottle cap codes), but I’m certain that I don’t have over 1700 bottle caps lying around or do I?  Anyway, if I enter the max each week, then I could come away with 5200 MCR points and earn another “free” trip to Six Flags.  But, more importantly to me and my mother, they’ll finally be out of our way.

Organize My Schedule to Accommodate Goals
If I want to be successful, then I need to organize my schedule and put in my day planner designated times for all of my desired activities. I like to organize—it is sticking to my plan that’s the problem.

Anyway, I’m certain that this is it for goals for the brand new year.  Hopefully, I will be able to achieve most of them and, perhaps, my quality of life will improve because of them (though I’m sure my health my deteriorate with all of the inactive anime and soccer viewing).

1.190: Shite Book Reviews #1

March, Book One
John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell

It took some time for me to finish this book, but not because of its size (it’s quite short) or because the subject matter was uninteresting (far from it).  Rather, it took time because (1) life happens and (2) I’m a procrastinator.  Anyway, March is a biographical graphic novel about the life of Civil Rights icon Congressman John Lewis.  For those of unfamiliar with Congressman Lewis, he is the last remaining person to give an address at the famed March on Washington in 1963, but there is much more to Congressman Lewis aside from that distinguished distinction.  Even now, Congressman Lewis remains a prominent figure in the ongoing struggle for racial equality in America and his words are genuinely heralded as he was an individual that prominently participated in the Civil Right Movement of the 1960s alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

But, this is not a poorly written biography of a great man instead it is a poorly written review of the biographical graphic novel he authored alongside two other respectable individuals.  The book takes place on January 20, 2009, the date of the Inauguration of President Barack Hussein Obama—America’s first black president, and it reads as though the congressman is sharing his life’s story with two visiting children.  In his recollection, he shares with the children the hardships of his childhood and struggles he faced in simply gaining an education in poor, rural Alabama.  He shares his dreams of being a preacher and his motivations for becoming involved in the movement for social justice.  And in truth, his story is a remarkable story—one that should be read, especially, with the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the Selma march and the recent release of the film, Selma.

Perhaps, my only issue with the book is with its visual aesthetics (petty, I know), but it was not visually appealing and sometimes it was just too cluttered and messy.  I know my own tastes and the artwork did not fall within them, but it is not so much a distraction that I was unable to enjoy the story being told; it simply meant that I would not be able to give it a perfect five-star rating on Goodreads.

By the way, in case you were wondering, since the majority of the books I read are from the library meaning I can’t ask the question of whether or not it was worth the price of purchase; I will be rating books in this series with the ratings I give the books on Goodreads.

Goodreads Rating:  4 Stars (Out of 5)

1.189: Goals for 2015

It was only a matter of time before I finally sat down and drafted a list of goals for the New Year.  Last year, I attempted some rather ambitious goals (and nearly all failed).  This year, I’m going to keep my goals short, specific and reasonable—no vague or unrealistic goals this year.  Anyways, let’s get started:

Goal #1:  Read 52 Books
Last year, I set a goal of 24 books and I demolished that figure by rediscovering my love for graphic novels and including audio books.  And yes, those mediums count because graphic novels are books and when your commute takes nearly an hour both ways; audio books are a fantastic way to past the time.  Anyways, I’m aiming for a book a week and I’m still going to include graphic novels and audio books so bite me!

Goal #2:  Attend Dragon Con AND AWA
As I mentioned in my previous update, Dragon Con is set.  Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA) is not.  Dragon Con is a wonderful event that I’ll get to share with some of my close companions, but it is also extremely expensive and with both conventions held within a month of one another; I know that it is going to be incredibly difficult on my budget.  AWA has become such a significant part of my life and since I began volunteering at the event two conventions ago, I feel as though there is still much more to give.  AWA is my event, my escape and my solace and to think that after so many years of attending and/or helping out that I may not be able to attend makes me sad.  So, I am going to try my best to make it to both events and that means saving money and tightening my budget even further than before.  It won’t be easy, but it is possible and this is something I really want.

Goal #3:  Be More Active Online
No, I don’t mean over-sharing on social media, but I do mean posting regularly (if not daily) on here, on my Tumblr, on Twitter, on Instagram and maybe, even on Facebook though I am not really interested in sharing my life with the people on there.  Not every post has to be poignant social commentary, but it needs to be meaningful to me regardless of how unintelligible and incoherent it may read.  Like I said before, I’m hoping to introduce some regular “columns” on J+30 and I’m still working on understanding Tumblr, but I hope this will motivate me to be more active in my ongoing battle to stave off oblivion.

Anyways, that’s it!  No resolutions about weight loss though I could stand to lose some, no goals about getting out of debt because that is not happening within a year and I am more likely to go further into it before I get out of it, and no promises about being a better person; I just want to be me—whatever that is—and I don’t want to be some fake individual that tries to get on with people that I know I could never get along with.  My life is my own and I’m the only that’s going to take care of it and as long as I do my best to take care of me; the rest should fall in line.  So, here’s to 2015 and whatever it brings my way and to anyone that actually reads this:  DFTBA.

1.88B: Something Positive

I suppose I could have ended 2014 in a somber manner, but even I couldn’t deny that there were some positive moments amidst the negativity expressed within my previous update.

For starters, I became close acquaintance with a couple of coworkers.  We frequently have dinner, watch movies and plan trips together.  In September of 2015, we are going to be going to Dragon Con for the entire weekend and we are actually staying at one of the host hotels—that’s crazy cool.

Speaking of movies, I had the opportunity to go see a number of really incredible and some not so incredible films this past year.  I’m not sure how to explain it, but there is just something special about watching a movie in a theater that I really enjoy.

I also, thanks to the aforementioned acquaintances from above, was able to really get into comic books (or more accurately, graphic novels).  Aside from going to Dragon Con, my acquaintances and I went to two Atlanta Comic Conventions where I had an opportunity to purchase some cool graphic novels at great prices.  Along with the conventions, we made trips to comic shops and they gave me the motivation to go ahead make a commitment to be more engaged in the comic community.

Also, in 2014, I found myself in position longer than any other position I have ever held.  Two-plus years in the library and despite the individuals I referenced in my previous update, I truly enjoy the actual job.  I can almost certainly say that I can see myself as a librarian for the foreseeable future.  As for whether or not, I plan on going back to school to earn a MLS degree—it is still up in the air.

Anyway, 2014 has had a number of ups and downs. I first give you the downs and now, the ups—all I can do now is wait to see what the upcoming year has in store for me.  It seems truly cliché and a bit overplayed, but see you next year and (I have forgotten this for some time) DFTBA.

1.188: Lessons from 2014

In a matter of a few hours, 2014 will end and 2015 will begin and with the close of every year, I thought I would take some time to discuss some of the lessons I have learned from the past year.

Lesson #1:
I don’t have to like you personally in order for me to work with you, but if you prove to be a burden on me or your other coworkers; then I will truly resent you.  For the better part of the latter part of the year, I have found myself growing increasingly frustrated by a growing number of my coworkers and while I still enjoy my job; I’m slowly growing out of like with many of my peers.  From blatant laziness to outright subversion, I’m learning that the number of coworkers I can trust are far fewer than the ones I mistrust.  Perhaps, it is my own fault that I have lowered my guard around these individuals, but at the same time; I am trying my hardest to get on with my peers.  In truth, I believe in the year ahead, I am going to have to reexamine my workplace relationships and adjust my handling of certain coworkers.  I realize that this sounds horrid, but if I am to advance my own goals; I am going to have to stay ahead of the game.

Lesson #2
Always manage one’s expectations because more often than not, managed expectations will lead to pleasant surprises when one’s expectations are met or exceeded.  The finest example of this lesson from the past year would be the Carolina Panthers.  Going into the season many experts picked the defending NFC South Division Champions to finish third in the division behind Atlanta and New Orleans and look at what happened:  the Panthers repeated as division winners with a 7-8-1 (they didn’t even have a winning record!)  The same could be said of Manchester United.  Sure, there were some hardcore supporters that always select the Red Devils to win the Premier League, but given the results of the previous campaign and the changing of the guard (yet again) at the managerial position and one could easily say that they would need at least one campaign if not two to gather their footing and return to the form that supporters are accustomed to seeing.  But, look at the Red Devils:  they sit in third place and are favorites to return to the UEFA Champions League during the next campaign.  All of these things were a pleasant surprise because I managed my expectations and kept them reasonable in my opinion.

Lesson #3
I’m going to be lonely for the remainder of my life and I will die alone.  In truth, everyone dies alone—you may die at approximately the same time, but the end result is that you pass on from this life alone and you return to stars alone or from a psychological standpoint (is it psychological?); you’re no longer conscious of whether or not you’re alone.  Anyway, that’s not the point I was getting at in this lesson.  Basically, I’m going to be a single male for the rest of my life.  I’m 31 years old and to date I have been in no meaningful relationships and the only physical relationship I’ve been a party to was just physical.  For anyone that has read a decent number of my updates, you would know that for some time now I had been smitten with a coworker, Emily, and despite my many vague and veiled attempts to gauge her thoughts on me; I have come to the conclusion that my adoration for her is unrequited.  In truth, at one point, she was becoming such a distraction that in for me to move on; I needed to loathe her and that may still be the way to go about it.  I can’t deny that I still hold on to my unrequited feelings, but I slowly accepting that I need to let it go by any means necessary.  Now, this isn’t to say that Emily was the only person for me—I’m most certain she isn’t—but I’m just not interested in playing this game though I was never really an active participant.  I’ve been hurt on a number of occasions and truthfully, I hate feeling shitty about myself unless I’m the one inflicted the anguish.

Anyway, those are the lessons I have learned from the past year.  If they sound depressing, it is because they are depressing.  I’m not always a miserable individual, but it does seem as though a significant segment of my life is mired in some sort of negativity.  But, on a more positive note, I do persevere and continue to exist.  Perhaps, things will change in the New Year, but given my track record; I wouldn’t count on it.

1.187: Shite Movie Review #9

The Imitation Game
For months, I had been anticipating the wide theatrical release of The Imitation Game in America and this past weekend I finally had my opportunity to see the film; here are my thoughts:

To be frank, a biographical film about an English mathematician would not sound like riveting cinema, but when the mathematician being present is (1) commonly regarded as the father of computers and (2) largely responsible for decoding the German Enigma machine, at the time, an encryption device thought impossible to crack, thus aiding Allied forces conclude the Second World War an estimated two-years early (and in the process, possibly saving 14 million lives); it sort of piques one’s interest—at least, it piqued my interest.  Also, the fact that the mathematician, Alan Turing, would be portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch and in my opinion, you have the potential for a fantastic movie.

Speaking of Mr. Cumberbatch, his portrayal of Alan Turing was superb, but it could be said that Mr. Cumberbatch is experienced in portraying socially-awkward geniuses.  His performance was such that I was able to not only endure particularly “embarrassing” scenes, but I was able to enjoy them and I found myself relating to Turing’s social ineptitude.  Perhaps, I am speaking of Mr. Cumberbatch with a biased perspective, but I am only biased because he continues to provide remarkable performances.

Now, the intriguing plot and the superb performance of the lead should be more enough for me to say:  “Yes, this film is entirely worth the price of admission,” but the film’s underlying message of sexual equality—Turing was gay and despite his efforts during the war (much of which remained classified long after his passing), he was charged and found guilty of indecency and his punishment was chemical castration, which ultimately led to him taking his own life at the age of 41—was yet another positive in the movie’s direction.  Truthfully, this same message may serve to deter certain right-wing religious zealots from seeing this movie and that is a shame because Turing’s story is one that should be known.

Anyway, as I alluded to previously, this film is certainly worth the price of admission and if you have an opportunity to see this fantastic depiction of the life of a man that has so immensely affected our world, then please go and see it.

1.186: Shite Movie Review #8

Top Five
Of all of the movies I have seen during this recent spell of movie outings, Top Five was above and beyond my favorite viewing experience.  Admittedly, the plot was rather predictable, but Top Five was more about the journey rather than the destination and the journey was both humorous and touching.  But, it must be said that one should have some grasp on hip-hop culture in order to truly understand the touching moments and to enjoy many of the humorous moments.  In other words, Top Five may not appeal to certain segments of our society that view the hip-hop culture in a negative matter or black culture in general, which is disheartening because I found Top Five to be so enjoyable.

Anyways, there are number of fantastic cameos from a number of established and upcoming stand-up comedians and to be frank; this was probably the funniest Adam Sandler has been in some time.  Honestly, I shouldn’t have to say it, but yes, Top Five was worth the price of admission and if you are looking for a good laugh during the holiday season and don’t mind some raunchiness (because there are a couple sequences that involve nudity), then I would highly recommend Top Five.

1.185: Shite Movie Review #7

The Hobbit:  The Battle of the Five Armies

At long last, the saga of Middle-Earth draws to a close (or at least until Peter Jackson ascertains the film rights to The Silmarillion), but was the final third of The Hobbit trilogy worth the price of admission?  To be frank:  No.  Now, I will say that if you have already invested the time and money in seeing the first two Hobbit movies, then yes, go and finish the trilogy because that sort of investment should not be wasted.  If you have not seen the first two movies, then I would recommend waiting until its DVD / Blu-Ray release and when you have a day; marathon the films (if you feel inclined to watch the series).

In truth, I could have done without The Hobbit trilogy because (1) it should not have been a trilogy and (2) there was no need for a prequel.  Certainly, there was plenty of splendid scenery to behold and a few fun battle sequences, but it was not enough to warrant splitting the shortest book of the Middle-Earth saga into three parts.  Personally, I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings series and was excited when it was reported that Jackson would be returning to Middle-Earth for The Hobbit, but now; I wish Jackson would have simply left it at The Return of the King.

1.184: Shite Movie Review #6

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)

The hype was real—seven Golden Globe nominations (including Best Picture, Musical or Comedy), four Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination (including Best Ensemble), etc.—and the hype was met.  From the matter in which the movie was filmed to the incredible drum score, Birdman was definitely deserving of the accolades and plaudits it has received and I would highly recommend seeing the movie unless artistic, critically-acclaimed movies are not your cup of tea.

A lot can be said or has already been said about the parallel between Michael Keaton’s actual career and the career of the character he portrays in Birdman, but attempting to make such a comparison goes far and beyond the realm of a shite movie reviewer like me.  What I will say is that I enjoyed the performances of Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Zach Galifianakis and I was intrigued by the ambiguity of whether or not Keaton’s character actually possessed “powers” or if these moments were merely a manifestation of his deteriorating mental state.

Personally, I would like to believe in the former, but it is most likely the latter—either way works.  As for whether the film was worth the price of admission—$8 for a matinee screening—the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, I would have willingly paid full adult admission for an evening screening of Birdman.

1.183: Shite Movie Review #5

The Hunger Games:  Mockingjay - Part I

In truth, I had much more to say this review of Mockingjay – Part I, but the more I thought about it; the more I came to realize that I simply did not like it.  Sure, there were some high points that provide a glimmer of hope for the second part, but my preconceived notions developed from reading The Hunger Games trilogy were too much to be ignored.  If you saw the first two films, then I will say this of Mockingjay – Part I:  it was better than its predecessors, but it still does not mean you should invest the money to see it in a theater, especially, when there are far better options.  Wait for this to be released on DVD or, better yet, Netflix and then hope that part two carries on the positive wave of part one.  Was Mockingjay – Part I worth the price of admission?  No.

1.171

To be frank, I'm not pleased with the direction this site has taken.  Some of the issues I have with this site are:

It lacks a formal format.  (Example:  When I post from my smartphone, none of the posts are justified.)
It's no longer aesthetically pleasing.
It is inconsistent in describing itself. (Example:  Is it a site or a blog? Is it a post or an update? And so forth)
I'm not posting consistently.
The titles for posts (or updates) are not uniformed. (Example: Long format or short format? Subtitle or no subtitle?)
Honestly, it feels as though I'm straying from a path while at the same time; not even knowing what that path is.

I want to make this a pleasant experience for not just visitors, but primarily for myself, so that I will be encouraged to continue forward.

All I ever do nowadays is whine and complain and while it is a fair reflection of my actual demeanor; I still don't like it.

Anyway, I need to work on finding a way to salvage this while at the same time maintaining simple routine of publishing (or posting) updates (or posts).

04 December 2014

1.161: The ranting continues

I'm not sure why but I'm in a particularly vocal (or as vocal as drafting an update permits) mood this evening and I have a few more things I would like to get off my chest before I call it a night.

1) People can call me a control freak, a dictator, or just plain stubborn and they would be correct.  I hate being out of control and I despise being held hostage to the whims of others, but there is an explanation for my controlling nature:  I want shit done and I want it done right.

Here's the issue: one of my coworkers is an indolent imbecile that is nothing but a hindrance to others around her.  The shear levels of laziness exhibited by this individual is on another level and yet, she fails to realize this fact herself.

Seriously, on a recent employee evaluation, she was dumped upon with multiple examples of her obvious and blatant laziness and her most vocal complaint dealt with issues of personal phone calls while on the clock. Really?

This woman doesn't even deny her ineffectiveness and lack of productivity!

All I expect from my coworkers is that they do their jobs and fulfill the expectations and responsibilities of their position.  If you can do that simple task, then I am good with you.

-----

Actually, that is all for now. I may come back with a few more complaints later.

03 December 2014

1.160: The struggle is real

I'm going to try this again, but this time I'm going straight in and I'm not pulling punches.  First off, fuck the grand jury that permitted yet another police officer off the hook for killing another black man.  And second, fuck my white coworkers for being oblivious to their white privilege.  Look, I'll admit it: I'm Asian and as far as minorities in America goes, we're doing okay. But, that doesn't mean I'm getting a free pass on the race train.  I've been fortunate that the amount of ignorant, racist shit I've encountered in my life is minimal in comparison to my counterparts of black or Latino heritage, but it happens and for the most part; I brush off.

Now, some (myself included) will say that I'm whitewashed and that I'm a fake Asian, but fuck you! I may have primarily white friends and enjoy white activities, but that is more a product of the environment than the fact that I'm any less of a minority; I'm whitewashed not white.  Honestly, attempting to explain white privilege to individuals that received the majority of their news from FOX or sites like Drudge is similar to ramming one's head into a brick wall--the wall will remain standing, but you'll be left bloodied and mangled.  Earlier this evening, I sat as I listened to three of my white coworkers defend the excessive actions of these overzealous police officers.  In the Ferguson case, Michael Brown was a thug that was behaving like punk and that meant he deserved to be shot to death multiple times while the shooter didn't even deserve to stand trial.  In the case of Eric Garner, the police was right to utilize a banned maneuver in subduing a large black male for illegally selling cigarettes on a street corner.  In Cleveland, where a twelve year old black child was killed by a white police officer, the officer had to defend himself from a twelve year old with a realistic looking Airsoft gun.  And in the grand scheme of things, the reason for all of this is, according to my lazy ass, imbecile departmental coworker, rap music and the fact that it perpetuates violence (-.-*). OMFG!

Honestly, I want to say I like my coworkers, but moments like this really aggravate for a couple of reasons: (1) because they're oblivious idiots and (2) I'm the fucking tool that let's shit like this be spoken because I'm to slow-witted to appropriately retort at the moment.  So there, some this anger is about me, but a lot more of it is about how ignorant and simple-minded certain white people are in regards to race relations.  As the viral hashtag goes: #BlackLivesMatter despite what grand juries, the media and my coworkers want to believe.

My god I hope this makes some sense because this off the cuff writing style is the sort of shit I try so hard to avoid because of my undiagnosed OCD.

I'm good for nothing!  I can't even rant effectively.  I've just spent the past two hours drafting a rant about my coworkers and the ineptitude of the library system's administrators and it's come to nothing because I can't get my shit together and now I've run out steam.

I sincerely believe I'm getting dumber or I may have never been as smart as I think I am.

I hate drafting posts.

Actually, I’m indifferent about the actual drafting process—it is my obsessive compulsiveness that tends to cause many of the issues I have with drafting and publishing updates.  For reasons beyond my understanding, I often find myself in positions in which I will scrap an entire update simply because the text appears unsymmetrical.  Personally, it is not about the words and what is being said; it is about how it appears.

I wish I could get over this issue, but it is difficult.

1.150: A Hero for Dannie

I attended my second Atlanta Comic Convention (ACC) today and despite the wet and dreary weather, I enjoyed myself and I believe my coworkers enjoyed the event too.  I never have much of a budget for these types of events and I never have any plan for buying (unlike fellow attendees that come prepared with notebooks of missing single issues), but I did manage to purchase the first volume of The Movement.  To be honest, I'm not too familiar with the series beyond the fact that Gail Simone wrote it until it was cancelled, but I really didn't purchase the item because of I was interested in the plot.  Instead, I purchased it because it features a character named Katharsis (A/K/A Kulap Vilaysack), a winged character with exceptional strength and sword skills, who happens to be of Lao origin--making her (as for as I'm aware) the first Lao American superhero (or villain--her first appearance was as an antagonist in Batgirl) featured in a major comic series.

Personally, I think this is rather cool considering the only other Lao characters of any sort of renown in mainstream media are the Souphanosinphone family from King of the Hill.  Of course, Katharsis may never reach the same level of notoriety as Khan and Khan Jr., but it is remarkable that the media is beginning to recognize individuals from the small landlocked country in Southeast Asia.  And another cool thing about Katharsis is that she could serve as a character in which young Lao girls, like my two year old cousin Dannie, can look towards and say:  "She's Lao like me!"  I guess it's my hope that I can use Katharsis as means to inspire my little cousin that she be more because, believe me when I say this, she has a lot going against her.

Anyway, aside from the ACC, my coworkers and I stopped by Titan Comics in Gwinnett where I actually ending up spending more money there than at the ACC because that's what happens when one has sporadic relationship with comics throughout much of his life and has just now discovered that he may want to take this hobby a bit more seriously.  Also, it's what happens when one focuses primarily on newer titles and volumes of a series.

Regardless, today was good and I do look forward to the next ACC and my next visit to my local comic book shop.

Psychologically, I am in a bad place.  I would not say that I am depressed, but I am certainly not happy.  I want to say that this feeling is the result of the malaise I feel about my job, but I am almost certain that this is not the case.  In fact, I would say this feeling of discontent stems from the possibility of another coworker stealing attention away from me (i.e., I may be jealous).  Then again, my emotional state may be the result of my unwillingness to improve my own situation despite knowing it is necessary.

Regardless of the reason, I understand that there is something that needs to be changed if I am going to be able maintain my sanity.

19 November 2014

1.146

I struggle to identify new topics to discuss and when I am unable to generate a topic, I am less incline to post.

So, I have decided to use a random topic generator to assist me in selecting topics of discussions for John Past 30.

Topic 1:  Chinese art and culture

I am unfamiliar with Chinese art and culture, but that does not mean I am not interested in knowing more about the topic.  Of course, being of Southeast Asian decent could mean that many of my daily rituals may already run similar to the culture of certain parts of China.  I suppose there is much more that could be stated in regards to this topic, but attempting to do so with such limited knowledge seems counterproductive.

Topic 2:  Learning to play keyboard

I have always wanted to learn to play a musical instrument and there was even a moment when I tried to learn to play the piano, but that phase has since come and gone.  In truth, my lack of interest in learning to play the keyboard stems from the instrument's lack of mobility; I would much prefer to learn how to play the ukulele.

I believe I will call it day on this possible new feature to JP30. Perhaps, next time, I will not approach this so half-assed.

1.145: Shite Movie Review #4

I really want to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, but for the sake of brevity and directness, I will say the following:

YES! Dumb and Dumber To is worth the ticket if you, like myself, grew up with the original film.

To be frank, I believe this film is worth the price of admission if you can lower your comedic taste down a notch.

I want to say more, but it is 10 PM and for some reason, I am struggling to stay awake.  But, go and watch the film, especially, if you were a 90s child.

1.138: Shite Movie Review #3

NOTE:  I can't believe how long it's been since my last "#ShiteMovieReview" (#SMR), but the past few months have seen "the films I want to see" cupboard run bare.  Fortunately, the Fall/Holiday movie season is here and I'm hoping to have more #SMR in the works over the next few weeks as there are a number of movies I plan on seeing.  Anyways, let's go!

Interstellar

I think I liked Interstellar though I'm not quite certain why I like the film.  Of course, the actual question to be answered here is:  Was it worth it?  To be frank, I'd say YES.  For starters, the movie runs 2 hours, 49 minutes--if that isn't bang for your buck, then I don't know what is.  Second, I did appreciate the underlying messages of the film:  stop rejecting science, fund space exploration and invest in face masks.

My primary objection to Interstellar was its resolution--it felt rushed (or as rushed as a nearly three hour feature permits) and it was a bit of stretch even for its genre.  Aside from the awkward resolution and lingering conclusion, I still enjoyed the film (I think) or that is at least what I have been telling my coworkers when they ask me.

Year 1, Day 132

Tonight was disappointing.  From a political standpoint, it seemed inevitable.  At best, Democrats could delay the Republican onslaught until January.  From a personal standpoint, tonight’s results do not represent a step forward for Democrats in this increasingly backwards state.

At the top of the ticket, the Democratic Party of Georgia put forth two of its best:  Michelle Nunn, the daughter of former Senator Sam Nunn and the former head of one of the largest non-profit organizations in this country, and Jason Carter, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and a bright and rising star within the Democratic Party at multiple levels.  And both lost, most likely by double-digit figures, to two individuals with less than appealing character traits—one who is ethically-challenged and the other who is apathetic toward the plight of the lives he has crushed simply to turn a quick buck.

In my opinion, the results from tonight are a clear demonstration that regardless of the candidate or the grassroots organization; Georgia will remain a “red” state for the foreseeable future because its electorate is composed of ignorant bigots that hate the idea of a colored POTUS and continues to believe that a woman’s rightful place is in the home.

So, what happens now?  I don’t really know.  But, if I were in charge:
  1. Raise $94,400 (i.e. – the cost to qualify 236 “candidates” for legislative office—I think
  2. Identify courageous, thick-skinned and vocal individuals to serve as “candidates”
  3. Research every Republican incumbent and identify three character flaws to attack them on it, relentlessly

Some will say it’s a waste of money, but basically, my plan is fuck with Republicans—just annoy the fuck out of them.  It may not win any seats—it most likely won’t win any seats, but it would be hilarious and serve as a clear example that Democrats can get down and dirty in the Georgia red clay too.

Year 1, Day 128

Earlier today, I saw a video posted onto Facebook that showed members of the local HS football team entering the field and then "voluntarily" participating in a group prayer.

First off, let me just say that none of those kids did that voluntarily--there may not have been an announcement or a visible adult telling them to go and pray upon entering the stadium--but these kids did not come up with this idea on their own.

Sports in the south is inundated with needless references to the Christian faith: from scripture used as inspirational quotes to taking a knee for an injured player.

These kids--these teenagers--had this idea (like most every other idea teenagers have) planted in their heads. Teenagers are impressionable and (while they will never admit it) easily persuaded by authority (by this I mean, their actions are always a response to an authority figure's action whether that be in adherence to in opposition to).

The second thing that irked me about this post was the comment made by the poster that made it sound as though these teenagers were some sort of saints for having the courage to take part in the prayer. WRONG! It doesn't take courage to follow a large group of people--it takes courage to do what's right. It would have been far more difficult for player to not have participated because of the amount of grief they would have received for it.

And on another point, these teenagers aren't saints or heroes--they're teens and unless we have become blinded by age and having our heads stuck so far up our on asses; we were teenagers once too. And I don't know about you, when I was a teen, all I was worried about were girls, fun and how awesome it would be to be out on my own--I was on the straight and boring path of teenage existence. But these jocks, after the games, they were about sex, drugs and parties not Bible study, prayer circles and living the word.

Basically, what I'm getting at is that these kids weren't being brave, they were being hypocrites and these parents or adults that are trying to use them as some sort of message aren't spreading the word; they're willfully feigning ignorance of their own past.

29 October 2014

Year 1, Day 125

First, congratulations to the San Francisco Giants for winning the World Series.

Second, congratulations to the Kansas City Royals for a remarkable season.

Outside of the Atlanta Braves, I don't follow baseball and in a few years--once the Braves "white flight" out of downtown Atlanta and into the suburbs of Cobb County--my interest in the sport will more than likely dwindle to nothing.

27 October 2014

Year 1, Day 123

While the boss is away, I will do my best to keep things running as smoothly as possible.  I understand that there are times in which I lose focus and I become less productive, but these moments are just moments and I can usually rediscover my groove.  To be honest, the typical work day is rather mundane and of very little interest to others, but I continue to move forward.

26 October 2014

Year 1, Day 122

Today was pleasant.  I watched soccer, I watched football (of the American variety), I ate at my favorite local Chinese buffet, and I had an Oreo blizzard.  The weather was fantastic and...well, that was about it.

To be frank, I wish I had been more productive.  I still need to read a handful of graphic novels and the copy of Black Belt Librarians I borrowed from Jeanne via Lisa as well as prepare the kiosk presentations for the upcoming week, draft the desk schedule for the upcoming week, and formulate a proposal to turn the IT department head position from a position that I am currently totally unqualified for into a position that I have some qualifications for.

Also, I need to do the laundry, figure out which manga and DVDs I want to donate to the library and wish my friend, Mark, a happy birthday.  And I need to do all of this before I run out of steam, which is much sooner than later.

Anyway, I hope that I can get this stuffed panned out before tomorrow.

23 October 2014

Year 1, Day 119

I suppose at times I can be as chatty as a teenage girl.  Anyways, a conversation with a friend caused me to miss posting yesterday (Day 118) so I am going to post something before I call it a night.

For obvious reasons, I have recently become enthralled by the lovely April O'Neil (pictured below).

Source:  April O'Neil Instagram (heyitsaprilagain)
There is a lot to be said about an adult entertainer that takes her stage name from one of your animated childhood crushes and is, as demonstrated in the proceeding photograph, a fellow Whovian. On top of these things, she is a noted gamer, a cosplayer (again, demonstrated above), a comic book reader and an all-around interesting individual.

Anyways, I thought it was important that I share my latest infatuation and think of me what you will, but I am simply a man with desires and at this time; my desires are to learn more about this remarkable woman via SFW and NSFW means.

21 October 2014

Year 1, Day 117

To be honest, I'm lacking in the area of possible topics to discuss this evening, but I'm giving it (posting an update) a goal anyways.

It could be said of me that whenever a grand opportunity presents itself before me, I will be the first to find some way to bypass it.

Today, the library posted the job opening for the position of IT Department Director and while my colleagues in Circulation believe that I would make an excellent option for the position; my own internal self doubts that strongly.

Yes, I can do basic things on a computer and with direction, I can piece things together (when I'm in the mood), but it is the complicated things like actually putting together a network, maintaining that network and other IT-related responsibilities that scares me.

In truth, I could always make plans to learn this stuff, but actually executing it is the main issue. I'm a visionary with no willingness to make that vision reality.

I will have to contemplate on this issue hard, but I know in my heart of hearts that I'm not ready nor am I sure that I ever will be.

20 October 2014

Year 1, Day 116

Well, not quite Day 116 since I'm posting this a little before 5 AM and the day has yet to "start."

Anyways, I'm unable to fall back asleep and so I thought that I'd take this time to actually post something since my postings have become more and more sporadic.

As for my Anime Weekend Atlanta recap, I do plan on completing that at some point though it'll be more difficult as time passes. (You know what they say about human memory: it's crap.)

I haven't been to a movie in a while so there haven't been any "Shite Movie Reviews", but the fall / winter movie season is upon us and there are some movies I'm interested in seeing. Hopefully, we'll get back on track with that soon rather than later.

If you couldn't guess, I'm on the iPhone again, but sometimes you have to work with what you have.

I'm going to have to wrap this up soon since it appears as though I'm running out of space on the Blogger app, but know that I haven't forgotten about this blog it's just that I'm lazy.

05 October 2014

Year 1, Day 101

A week has passed since the close of Anime Weekend Atlanta (AWA) and I find myself within the grasp of one of my worst bouts with con withdrawal in recent memory.  For the uninitiated, con withdrawal is the feeling of malaise one has after being ripped viciously from one’s convention “family and friends” and being thrown back into the “reality” of what is one’s “normal” and mundane life.  I may have exaggerated a bit, but I think I have expressed my point poignantly.

Anyway, I know that I have yet to write anything about the convention despite stating that I may do so during the convention, but volunteering at an all-volunteer run convention that hosted 20,000+ attendees made that more difficult than I imagined.  So, here now is a rundown of my AWA in as close to chronological order as possible:

Friday:
I arrived about a half-hour before the start of my first shift and prior to retrieving my staff badge holder and badge, I came across a younger cousin and his girlfriend; it was the only time I saw him during the weekend.

My first assignment was assisting with the line for the Grand Opening ceremonies.  The line was big, we had to “snake” the line three-fold, and it was without a doubt, the largest line for an event that I worked during AWA.

Following the clearing of the Grand Opening line, I was assigned to badge check at the Kennesaw panel room for a panel about anime references in mainstream pop culture (I think).  Of course, my first panel of the day would not go off without a hitch and that hitch: the panelists were unable to operate the soundboard.  Since I refused to take on a supervisory role, I had no means of contacting Tech staff (i.e. – I had no walkie-talkie on hand) and I needed to track down this section’s supervisor, which I eventually did.  At that point, I was assigned to organize the line for my first guest panel of the convention, a Q&A session with Scott McNeil.  In truth, organizing the line was rather simplistic and I was able to make my exit before the trouble arose.  In case you were wondering, the Q&A did not take place Friday nor did Mr. McNeil’s autograph session because Mr. McNeil had not yet arrived at the convention.  Apparently, he was caught up in the mess at the Chicago airport and had his flight cancelled; he did eventually make it to AWA and was very generous with what time he had left.

From Section 4(?), I was then assigned to Section 5(?) (AKA Autographs) since my assigned Section 2 was not needed.  My first autograph line assignment was Home Made Kazoku (HMK), a Japanese hip-hop trio known for tracks that served as the opening and closing themes for popular anime series like Naruto and Bleach.  For Japanese guests at the convention, the instructions were simple:  90-person limit, one item autographed and no photographs.  HMK did not hit their limit, which was disappointing in my eyes, but I think the AWA attendees more than made up for it during their Saturday evening concert.

The second guest I work their autograph line for was Junichi Suwabe, a Japanese voice actor who is currently voicing the lead character in Space Dandy.  His lead did get capped and I ended up being the individual that held slips of papers that attendees could fill out if they wanted a personalized autograph; this was a rather smart idea in my opinion since there was a clear language barrier.  This line moved rather efficiently and the highlight had to be the fact that he cosplayed as Dandy and there was Meow cosplayer on-hand for photographs too.

By the time the Suwabe line cleared, I was well over my scheduled shift time and I had yet to check into my hotel room and my next shift was scheduled to start in just over an hour-and-a-half.  Also, I hadn’t eaten anything yet aside from a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

After settling into my room, grabbing a quick bite to eat at Chick-Fil-A and returning to the convention just in time for my shift, I was assigned to Events for badge check duty for the premiere of the English-dubbed version of the second season of High School DxD, but before that took place; I needed to relieve someone at the Highlands(?) panel room until it was time for me to work the Grand Panel room.

When I arrived at Highlands, the Yuko Minaguchi panel was just wrapping up and Ms. Minaguchi, the Japanese voice actress for Sailor Saturn in Sailor Moon S, was preparing to take some photographs with some of the attendees of her panel.  The next panel on tap was a panel about Marvel anime series, but I did not stick around too long since I had another assignment to tend to.  And here is where the fun began for me on Friday evening.

In truth, badge check duty is simple and rather monotonous unless it turns out that the premiere you are working at is for anime series in which the American production company sends the uncensored version of the series and fails to mention it to the convention organizers and you have already let a number of minors into the screening (d’oh)!  Fortunately, there were no complaints that I know of and too be honest; I don’t expect any to be made.

Now, the real fun began as the time drew closer to karaoke and the people were beginning to line up—at this point, I had already organized the line for another anime world premiere and now, it was time to organize an even bigger line.  In truth (and you may call me a bit of a glutton for punishment for it), the real fun occurs when there is a complete lapse in communications between two departments and you and your department get thrown under the wheels of the bus (it was Touhou all over again for me).  Anyway, we had received two sets of directions: (1) karaoke participants could go ahead and enter the room and wait for High School DxD to clear and then (2) everyone needed to clear out and a line needed to be formed immediately outside of the registration area.  Of course, there is nothing like contradictory directives to create chaos, but my partner and I did the damn thing, made it work and got everyone inside and out of registration’s hair.

And like with my previous shift, I ran over my scheduled time (which will be a recurring theme), but I clocked out at 10 PM and checked out a bit of Anime Hell before grabbing a late dinner and calling it a night.

On a side note, I have a feeling that if I am back next year to work AWA; I’ll be getting my own room because I don’t know if I can deal with roommates, especially, roommates that are loud and obnoxious at terrible hours of the night.

So, this has recap has gone on for way too long and I have only covered one day of it.  I suppose I am going to have to cut it here and come back later to recap the rest of my con.  Until then, stay safe and don’t forget to be awesome!

26 September 2014

Year 1, Day 92

Today is the day.  Today is the first day of Anime Weekend Weekend.  Come noon, anime otaku from across Georgia and the Southeastern United States will converge in Smyrna for a weekend of fun and excitement (or so we hope).  Of course, rather than sleeping, I have decided to procrastinate in my preparations and instead update my iPhone and post this update.  I will admit that I am a bit anxious yet at the same time I am assured and confident that the weekend will be good (it always is). A few things occurred today, but I believe I am going to put my blinders on and focus instead on the convention.

Following the convention, I can focus on the other things at hand like a two-night training seminar in Bainbridge (a 4.5-hour drive from HQ), establishing my staff council agenda, and so forth.  Anyway, I hope to be able to keep up to date while at the convention, but it will most likely be on my tumblr site:  johnpast30.tumblr.com. I have a long night and weekend ahead of me, but maybe I will see you on the otherside.

25 September 2014

Year 1, Day 91

It's been awhile since I last struggled with falling asleep but here I am struggling to fall asleep. My updates have become more sporadic over the past few weeks and I have no one to blame but me. Anyway, a quick update and then I'll try to fall asleep again: Anime Weekend Atlanta is tomorrow and while it'll be a nice break; I'm beginning to wonder if it might be more trouble than it's worth. I might try to do some posting while at the convention but it will most likely be on Tumble.

Well, I better try to get to sleep now.

21 September 2014

Year 1, Day 87

It seems as thought my grand experiment with Swift Type is over for now because of an issue I can't seem to find a solution to.

Anyway, Manchester United were humiliated by newly promoted side Leicester.

The Atlanta Braves were eliminated from postseason contention.

And the Carolina Panthers are embarrassing themselves on Sunday Night Football.

The only team that won were the Georgia Bulldogs, but they were playing Troy State.

20 September 2014

Year 1, Day 86

I'm posting from my iPhone again but today is slightly different because I'm using this new app that allows me to type by simply sliding my fingers around the keyboard. I'm still not that good with it but I'm slowly getting the hang of it and it's actually really fun. There's a few things that take getting used to but I'm sure that I'll get it before too soon. Anyway I've been slacking in the posting department but I hope to get back in the swing of things sooner rather than later. I'm less than a week away from Anime Weekend Atlanta and too be honest the biggest concern for me is whether or not I want to add a night prior to or following the convention. I know that I don't have the money either way but I'm at the point where I am just going to say screw it and I'll worry about it later. I hate that I have to live in perpetual debt but that's my life and I'll have to clean it up after the fact. A lot of things have been happening in my life as of late and I may eventually get around to discussing it sooner or later but it isn't happening today.

17 September 2014

Year 1, Day 83

I'm getting screwed by the GADOR over my tax filings in 2010. This puts an incredible strain on my already tight budget, but I'll figure it out in the end.

16 September 2014

Year 1, Day 82

Quick Shots:
I'm not sure where I stand on the Adrian Peterson issue.

The Braves are bad and the name of the new stadium is even worse: SunTrust Stadium.

15 September 2014

Year 1, Day 81

Quick Shots:

YES, Danny Ferry and the scout that wrote that analysis of Luol Deng should be fired. Then again, I hate the owners of the Hawks and think they should all go away.

YES, I do believe that Manchester United can finish in the top four of the Premier League. Hell, if they play like they did against QPR, then they can win the title.

Anyway, that's all for now. Bye

14 September 2014

Year 1, Day 80

I'm lazy.

I know this fact and I do nothing.

I'm irresponisible and I do nothing.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out a means of motivating myself to achieve anything.

Look at this site for example--it's rubbish!

The updates are infrequent, the layout is amateurish, and the lack of topics is just confusing.

I want to be better, but it is so difficult for me.

11 September 2014

Year 1, Day 77

It seems as though the only time I post from an actual desktop is when I am at the library and even then I have to be wary of the possible issues that may arrive from posting updates from my place of employment. It is not as though I am posting anything inappropriate, but I (see yesterday's update) tend to vent personal frustrations stemming from the workplace.  So, in order to avoid any personal issues, I thought I would take this opportunity to write about some other issues that have me thinking.

Ray Rice - This guy is dirty and if he does not ever play in the league again, it is of his own doing and his wife should realize that fact.  Of course, if Roger Goodell stays on as commissioner of the league; he will be suiting up next season for Dan Snyder and the team from Washington D.C. with the derogatory name and it would be a perfect fit.

Roger Goodell - This man is trash. With Goodell, it is profit over people and following this debacle with Rice; he needs to go.

Now, I know given my statements yesterday, I sound like a hypocrite and I admit it.  But, I would never strike a women (unless for some reason, I was forced to in a sanctioned boxing or MMA fight, but that's not happening anytime soon).  Believe it or not, I do believe in the feminist movement and I believe in treating women in a manner they deserve.

I understand that I have a long ways to go to improve myself, but I am trying.

10 September 2014

Year 1, Day 76

I have to make this quick since I lost track of time watching YouTube videos.

Anyways, here's what I've got:
1) I'm pretty sure that I hate that co-worker that I thought I loved. Yes, it does seem a rather extreme route to take for getting over something, but fuck it. She's a bitch--not for never returning my feelings but because she's a two-faces bitch.

2) I came up with an equation that explains my attitude (okay, maybe I didn't come up with up but who cares): give a fuck minus give a fuck equals zero fucks given.

3) This post may actually run longer than I thought since I actually have some shit to talk about today.

4) I'm cussing a lot in today's post, but who the fuck cares? Nobody reads this shit anyways.

5) I love Hannah Hart, but no way is she funnier than Ryan Higa and crew. Just saying, but I do enjoy both their channels immensely.

6) There are some really ignorant motherfuckers in this world and sadly, some come through my workplace.

I think that's enough for tonight and I hope I won't forget to post tomorrow.

08 September 2014

Year 1, Day 74

Farewell Monday.

I paid off the rest of my auto insurance.
I prepared lunch and then forgot it, but the bacon cheese Krystal burgers were good because of the ratio of bacon to Krystal patty; ill that I had to pay for lunch.

There's more but I can't be bothered at this moment.

07 September 2014

Year 1, Day 73

The first weekend of fantasy football is well underway and following the day's happening: it looks as though I'm on my to win.

I cut the grass and helped my aunt get her CPR/First Aid certification renewed. I'm beat.

05 September 2014

Year 1, Day 71

I have waited too long once more and now, I am tired.  But, to be honest, I am certain that I had little of importance to speak on.

As I mentioned yesterday, my plans for Dragon Con 2015 have been set and it is going to set my budget for the next year.

Simply reserving a room of the host hotels has given me such a greater appreciation of the affordability of "my" convention, Anime Weekend Atlanta.

I suppose it is a good thing that we have decided to go ahead with this plan because it gives me an entire year to properly plan and save.

As of now, I am waiting on my new credit card to arrive so that I can go ahead and pay for the remainder of my car insurance bill, pay for a four-day Dragon Con membership and pay for the hotel for this year's AWA.

Perhaps, I should consider taking up a hermit lifestyle.

Year 1, Day 70

I know that I have yet to write anything formal about my day at Dragon Con, but that post will have to wait as I have yet to upload any of my photographs from that day.  I will say that planning for Dragon Con 2015 is underway and we already have a room booked at the Hyatt.

A quick update to yesterday's post, I am feeling much better after I finally got some sleep--my head is clear and my eyes are no longer running.  I was afraid that I might have finally needed to use Sick Leave, but I was able to avoid it.

Another topic that I yet to discuss in-depth was Manchester United's transfer period transactions.  So, here we go:
  • The jury is still out on Ander Herrera since he has been injured for the most part during this early part of the season.
  • I think we overpaid for Luke Shaw, but that tends to happen in England for English players.
  • Is Marco Rojo even going to get a chance to put on his United kit?
  • Angel Di Maria while talented and certainly a positive addition to United was not worth the amount that United paid for him.
  • Daley Blind could be a something special, especially, since he will be working under Louis Van Gaal, his former national team coach.
  • Radamel Falcao was a remarkable coup for United, but his arrival signaled the departures of Chicharito and Danny Welbeck (Welbeck's departure was personal gut check and decisive end to any claims that United is capable of developing talent through its academy).
I suppose LVG has a plan, but his plan apparently, does not involve addressing the side's needs in central defense or midfield.  Now, do not get things twisted--I will remain loyal to the Red Devils--I'm just interested in seeing where all of this spending take the club.

Year 1, Day 69

Feeling rather ill at the moment. Going to try and rest now. See you tomorrow?

Year 1, Day 68

The first day back from any extended period of closure is difficult. For one reason or another, our patrons fail to grasp the concept of: "You're books will never be due on a day in which the library is closed." I could further complain about the ignorance of our patrons, but what would be the point? No matter how much you publicize a closure, there will still be those that will remain ignorant of it. If I sound annoyed, it is because I am, but not for the reasons implied in my preceding sentences. I'm annoyed at my ongoing financial struggles--annoyed at the fact this could have been avoided if only I had some restraint. Honestly, it's not my desire to be so whiny, but we all need to vent my frustrations and this is the medium I have chosen.

Year 1, Day 67

I'm disappointed with United's decision to not only sell off Danny Welbeck, a lifelong supporter of the club and an academy product, but to sell him to a league rival, Arsenal.

I know that following the signings of Di Maria and Falcao there was no longer a place for him within United's attack, but why make a move for Falcao when what the side needed was a central defender?

Yes, Falcao is a remarkably talented goal scorer, but he is coming off a major knee injury that not only ended his club season early last year but hampered his role at the World Cup.

I suppose the attack was lacking and there is a possibly that RVP may have his own major knee procedure, but it still irks me. Perhaps, because I want to believe that United are above just buying a side a la City.

But, I am wrong and I need to face the fact that days of youth academy development is no longer a critical part of the plans for clubs as large United.
